Digital learning scenarios designed to integrate professional training into the workspace in industrial production

In cooperation with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Chair of Production Systems at the Ruhr-University of Bochum, the Festo Learning Center, and the Brabant & Lehnert company, we are creating innovative digital learning materials to be used in industrial production.

The DigiLernPro project addresses the necessity to improve the integration of professional learning processes in industrial production into the work processes by use of digital media. This is happening on two different levels: on the machine level (during the manufacture of a product), where long training periods are a problem, and on the process level, where employees often lack knowledge about the products overall context.

In DigiLernPro, digital media are being used to develop semi-automatically generated learning scenarios, which initiate new ways of learning in the workspace. The learning scenarios are created by trained employees who have the skills that are necessary to perform a certain operation (e.g. a tool replacement). Other employees can access those recorded scenarios, when they encounter a problem. The scenarios will be presented to them in a way that serves their individual needs, so that they can acquire the necessary skills in order to perform the operation themselves. In this way, professional training is connected to the work process, and the acquired skills are used effectively within production procedures.

In the project, the ifib is responsible for evaluating the testing and further development of the learning materials and the tools used to create and supply them.

The project is funded by the program digital media in professional education initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
