The Virtual Region Northwest is an informal network of communities and other institutions from Lower Saxony and Bremen, existing since May 2002, with the common objective to improve regional cooperation in the field of e-government.

ifib supports regional cooperation especially by initiating and carrying out joint projects. For example, in the project "Bürgerservices im Auftrag" (innovative citizen services), a technical and organisational infrastructure for regional administration services was developed. By means of the "Dienstleistungsbeschreiber" (service describer), the inter-communal division of labour concerning the development and updating of governmental Internet offers was tested. The "Beteiligungsserver" (participation server) allows local authorities to quickly book low-priced technical support for citizen participation procedures. The project "Einfach im Nordwesten investieren und gründen - EINIG" (Invest and Found Easily in the North-West) supports local governments and chambers with the implementation of the EU Services Directive.
