M3K – Modelling and measuring media literacy
BMBF funding initiative Competence Modelling and Measurement in Higher Education
Media in general and the digital media in particular are becoming more and more relevant in various spheres of life and work and in the course of social changes. This also increasingly concerns contexts of learning and teaching and especially schools. Teachers need to be able to utilize media for teaching purposes as well as to perform media-related educational tasks. That requires abilities that go beyond the basic media literacy that students are generally supposed to acquire.
Media-pedagogical competence among teachers comprises, next to the individual teachers own media literacy, other aspects of competence in the fields of didactics, media education, and also school development. The research project M3K is funded through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is aimed at the modelling and measurement of media-pedagogical competence which is indispensable in modern teaching contexts. The M3K project is part of the project association set up by the BMBF funding initiative Competence Modelling and Measurement in Higher Education and is focused on media-pedagogical competence modelling in teacher training.
ifib is taking up the challenge to assess future teachers media-pedagogical competence in cooperation with other research institutes all of which have considerable expertise in the fields of competence modelling and/or media literacy research. Under the direction of the University of Paderborn (Prof. Dr. Bardo Herzig / Prof. Dr. Niclas Scharper), researchers of the German Institute for International Educational Research Berlin (Prof. Dr. Johannes Hartig, DIPF), of the University of Bochum (Prof. Dr. Silke Grafe), and of ifib (Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter) are establishing a competence model including an operationalisation for diagnostic test purposes. The aim of the M3K research project is to establish a set of test instruments based on the competence model in order to be able to measure media-pedagogical competence in teacher training.
